Hard Times

from Mind Wanderer by Paul Lee Kupfer

/

about

This song is adapted from the old dixieland progression of Saint James Infirmary Blues. It stomps along like a funeral march down the road. The tone is almost that of a Tom Waits Song, with a heavy drum and bass vibe, gritty stereo guitar solos and a whistle section at the end like the parade passing by. It moves and is very danceable. The lyrics are sung like an old blues song adapted to modern day.

lyrics

The hard times are coming.
The hard times are coming.
Everyone knows, that’s just how it goes.
There’s better on down the road.

And the road goes on forever.
The highways are tar and feather,
oil and blood, cold water and mud,
and the highways are tar and feather.

The hard times are coming.
The hard times are coming.
Everyone knows, that’s just how it goes.
There’s better on down the road.

There’s only two ways to go.
A rattling sign with a bullet hole
says the sun can’t tell you what the wind don’t know,
the road goes on forever.

Your feet just shuffle on the ground.
The clock stopped ticking when it came unwound.
Noise can’t tell you what’s coming from the sound,
so you shuffle, you shuffle on down.

The hard times are coming.
The hard times are coming.
Everyone knows, that’s just how it goes.
There’s better on down the road.

The hard times are coming.
The hard times are coming.
Everyone knows, that’s just how it goes.
There’s better on down the road.
